I Wrote a DOT Hours of Service Calculator

Written: June 6, 2024

Lately, I have been having a PHP itch so I decided to scratch it so I wrote a DOT Hours of Service calculator. For those of you who don't know, I have had my CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement since 2016. I love driving buses! Back in the day, I used to have this Excel hours of service calculator that my employer gave us, but I think it has been lost to time. So that inspired me to create this calculator.

This calculator is very easy to use. To help you make sure that you're compliant, it uses 14 days of data. Enter driving hours and "on-duty" hours and then click on Calculate.

The calculator will then show you a table as well as a graph showing you the hours. It also automatically takes into account the 34-hour reset period. That is, if you have a consecutive 34 hours off, it will reset your hours to 0 in compliance with FMCSA and DOT regulations.

Keep in mind I built this around passenger service! The rules are a little different for passenger drivers:

There may be bugs in this calculator (I'm not the greatest programmer ever!) so use at your own risk. If you have an idea on how I can expand it, do let me know!
